Personal Devices Source of Malware

In an embarrassing slip at Apple, a recent batch of iPods shipped with a Windows virus. The Apple website says, "As you might imagine, we are upset at Windows for not being more hardy against such viruses, and even more upset with ourselves for not catching it." How many IT managers have felt the same way after a virus infection?

The big issue here is not that Apple shipped some personal music devices with malware preinstalled (that's bad) but that personal devices are well suited to spread malware (that's worse). An earlier post mentioned the potential for smartphone malware to become a vector for introducing malware. Do we really want to be accomplices in infecting our own networks? Personal devices like smartphones, PDAs, and now iPods should be seen as another tool for malware transport and treated accordingly. The desktop AV is the first line of defense against these.
