Earthquake Disrupts Internet in Asia: Risk Management Goes Only So Far
An earthquake earlier today on the southern coast of Taiwan disrupted Internet services in Hong Kong, Japan, Taiwan and parts of India. As Marketplace report Amy Scott says, this ripple effects on business extended beyond the immediately affected area, "In Seoul this morning, the foreign exchange market slowed to a trickle. Stock traders switched to backup systems. Even in New York, currency trader Dixon Fung with MG Financial says business took a hit." And it's not over, Scott goes on to say. "telecom providers say it could take weeks to repair the damaged lines. The quake was so strong it even destroyed some backup cables."
This event is a good example of the limits of risk management and business continuity planning. Some disruptions are so significant that they stretch even the most ambitious and resiliant plans. Even with distributed IT operations centers and redundant data, employees, suppliers, customers and other business partners may be inaccessible after a natural disaster.
