Browsers Getting Better at Blocking Malware

Both Microsoft and Mozilla are taking on the challenge of the increasing threat of malware distribution through compromised sites. Internet Explorer 8 and Firefox 3 will include new features to help users avoid malware pushing sites.

Microsoft is using a combination of blacklists and heuristics to identify potentially malicious sites. The heuristics are based on behaviors of websites.

Firefox 3 will track known malicious sites and keep a hash of each. The browser will compare the hash of a site to a list of cached known malicious sites; if there is a hit on the local cache, the browser will do additional checks with a Google server.

Mark Snyder of Mozilla noted to Security Focus:

"We are not expecting a 100 percent solution on this, we are just making things better. (Just like) the anti-phishing protections were effective, much more effective than anything that was there before."
