Does Your IM Leak? Encrypt Instant Messages

In a recent podcast on information leaks, I covered some of the basics of preventing information leaks on both the technology and the policy sides of the problem. Often, information leaks can come from places we don’t expect, like an IM session.

IM messages sent over unsecured networks should be encrypted to prevent eavesdroppers from picking up your session. This is especially the case with wireless communications where picking up a signal is a relatively simple matter. VPNs already encrypt communications and enterprise IM systems support encryption but publicly available IM services still transmit messages in plain text.

Keep your information confidential. If it is going over an unsecured network, make sure your information is encrypted.
