Microsoft Ready to Provide Kernel Info?

It looks liker there is room for compromise on the question of the Vista kernel. Stephen Toulouse, a senior product manager in the Security Technology Unit of Microsoft, says in his blog that Microsoft is ready to work with third party security vendors (like McAfee, sponsor of this site) to provide the vendors the information they need to implement security products for Vista.

The focus of discussions now seem to center on the creation of a set of documented APIs that provide information about the state of the kernel, including: application launching, preventing unauthorized changes to security software, and memory management.

The open questions are, when will these APIs be made available? will they be enough? and what are the implications for malware writers who will try to exploit them? We haven't heard the end of this discussion.
