Better System Admin Tools: Oracle Management Pack for Linux
ComputerWorld is reporting, Oracle has announced Oracle Management Pack for Linux which supports both database and operating system management. The management pack is built on Oracle Enterprise Manager that is a centralized tool and repository for managing databases.
The pack includes tools for provisioning, patching, monitoring and administering Linux servers. If this pack is as good as other Oracle Enterprise Manager (OEM) functions, this will be welcome tool for system administrators. OEM is a one-stop shop for virtually all DBA tasks and it’s very easy to set it up to administer databases across the enterprise.
Oracle has honed their skills and deliver high-quality database management tools. Now they seem to be setting their focus on other systems administration tasks. According to ComputerWorld:
Historically, Oracle has focused on providing tools to manage its own databases, applications and middleware, but more recently the vendor has begun to extend its Enterprise Manager and Grid Control software via plug-ins to also handle third-party offerings. Last July, an Oracle executive told financial analysts in Boston that the company may look to gain more systems and network management expertise through acquisitions.
Anything that makes managing the application stack on database and application servers is welcome. Oracle has a proven track record, I’m betting it will continue as they move to helping us manage operating systems.
