Top Network Security Threats and Small Business

IT Security.Com has recently posted an article on network security threats to small businesses. Actually the threats are just as serious for mid-sized and large businesses. The article notes early on:

Unfortunately, and despite the best efforts of network security managers, the last five years have seen hackers and criminals become increasingly effective at compromising these networks, as they have quickly developed new and ever more malicious threats to network security.
These newly created threats have been so successful in large part because most employees of companies, despite being regular internet users themselves, have no idea how these new network security attacks work, and have only a vague conception that these new threats even exist.

The threats listed are include the usual suspects: viruses and worms, Trojan horses, spam and phishing. It also notes a couple that don’t get as much popular press attention like packet sniffers and hardware loss and residual data fragments. There is a discussion of prevention methods for each topic.

The list complements one from the Open Web Application Security Project (OWASP) on the Top 10 Threats Web Application vulnerabilities.
