Virginia Tech Massacre Brings Security Home

I live in Blacksburg, Virginia and it is difficult to contemplate writing a column on security the day after the Virginia Tech massacre.

There are still many questions about the details of yesterday’s events but one thought that is difficult to avoid is that no matter what we do to protect our families, our selves tragedy can and will strike. Blacksburg is a kind of place people come to raise their families and not worry about locking their doors. Now it is the site of the worst shooting massacre in U.S. history.

Some are already questioning if adequate security measures were in place at the Virginia Tech dorms while others point out the difficulty of security in an open society. I certainly don’t have any answers – I struggle with simple questions about balancing security and usefulness in software applications.

I’m afraid, security, in what ever form it takes, can only go so far. I will keep working at it though while knowing, in the end, there will be times that no matter what I do, it isn’t enough.
