Google Goes Public on Security
Google today launched a blog dedicated to online security. The addition of the Google Online Security Blog: efforts to the security discussion are especially welcome because Google can provide data that few others can.
Take for example, a recent paper on drive-by downloads and related threats. The authors used data on billions of URLs and did in-depth analysis of millions. Finally, some decent statistics on Web-based threats from compromised servers. We've had data on client infection rates for some time, now we're getting the other part of the story.
We've had small survey data, like the CSI/FBI annual reports but those use small sample populations and are self reported. Too much can be missed with those kinds of reports.
Google has the data and the staff to examine large volumes of traffic for emerging patterns and techniques in malware distribution, fraud and other threats. The data and analysis they can provide will be difficult if not impossible to get elsewhere.
