Ubuntu's Rising Star
Ubuntu is the celebrity operating system these days. It's been growing in popularity among Linux users but recent news from Dell and Intel are spreading the news.
First, there was Dell's decision to sell PCs with Ubuntu installed. That was a welcome announcement but Dell's follow on info about teaming with Microsoft and Novell to support SUSE Linux ticked off a lot of people.
Part of the MS/Novell deal concerns MS not suing Novell over IP infringement. What infringement? Is Linux wrongly using MS IP? If not, why tacitly agree to the implication? Result: Ubuntu is loved, SUSE is tainted and the Linux community is in a mixed mood over this.
On another note, Matt Zimmerman announced a plan with Intel to develop a mobile version of Ubuntu. He says:
We will start more detailed planning at the Ubuntu Developer Summit next week in Seville and the first release of this edition will be in October with Ubuntu 7.10. If you are interested in the project, please get involved. We will be working through our normal development processes on Launchpad, the developer mailing lists and IRC.
Ubuntu is joining forces with some industry heavy weights like Dell and Intel and as long as it doesn't get to close to Microsoft (the third rail of the open source community) Ubuntu's future is bright.
