iPhone Scares Some in IT

If you listen carefully, besides all the hype about AT&T preparing for an onslaught of customers when the iPhone is released on Friday, you'll hear a low level groan. That's coming from enterprise network managers who are worried about the impact of the iPhone on their current operations. As Computerworld points out, you buy into iTunes when you support the iPhone:

The iPhone could prove to be a nightmare for some IT departments because it requires an iTunes music directory account for each user. That could potentially put IT in the position of having to provide storage capacity for songs and ensure that copyrights aren’t being violated.

You can see the policy changes and reconfigurations coming. Apple, never a big presence in corporate enterprise, is working its way in. Will your vulnerability scanner check iTunes?

A Gartner analyst put it succinctly:

“How many enterprises want iTunes running around in the enterprise?” asked Gartner Inc. analyst Ken Dulaney. He noted that “lots” of Gartner clients have been asking questions about business use of the iPhone. IT managers “are scared of this device,” he said.
