Yet Another Spam Type Coming Your Way

PDF spam is now joined by another file type, Forms Data Format (FDF), which can escape basic spam filtering according to John Leyden at The Register. (For details on PDF spam, see the article New Kid on the Block: PDF Spam). This is no surprise, we seen spam couched in other file formats, what is surprising is how effective it is.

Last week The Register reported on one pump and dump scheme that pushed up a stock value by 60%:

Shares in Prime Time Group rose 60 per cent on the back of the junk mail campaign. There is nothing to suggest that the firm itself is involved. Prime Time Group has launched an investigation aimed at identifying whoever is selling its stock short in the hope of making a quick (possibly fraudulent) buck.

I suspect that kind of ROI is a lot better than pushing pharmaceuticals and waiting for the 10-15 responses in one million.
