More Security and Compliance Tools for Google Apps

Associated Press reports Google will make an announcement later today about an upgrade to their corporate email service. The tools acquired in the Postini acquisition will likely be the center of attention.

Founded in 1999, Postini provides tools that insulate e-mail from viruses and spam, recover lost data and ensure employees sending and receiving messages don't violate company policies.

Google bought Postini largely to address concerns that its corporate e-mail service lacked adequate security and compliance measures.

This is an evolutionary move, not revolutionary. It won't change the competitive landscape but it will make Google Apps a more serious contender for some.

The big question, I think, is how much control businesses will have over policies applied to their accounts? Will they have anywhere near the functionality they can get now from internal email systems? Google Apps doesn't need to match every bell and whistle (we don't need an other bloated product that competes on irrelevant feature list comparisons) but it does need to cover fundamental functional requirements, especially for AV filtering, content filtering and reporting.
