SMBs Getting Attention from Security Vendors

Small and mid-sized businesses face many of the same threats of larger enterprises but they don't have nearly the resources to addresses them. Vendors and resellers are on to this. Take for example, the announcement yesterday from Anchiva about a multi-function security appliance targeted to SMBs. The appliance performs anti-virus and anti-malware scanning as well as reputation based URL filtering. For small IT shops that don't have the luxury of debating the pros and cons of unified threat management vs. best of bread solutions, appliances like this will become common.

Even with a unified solution, you can't just drop it on the network and expect to get the most out of it. Appliances still have to fit in a multi-layered security strategy. That's were the second piece of the puzzle comes in.

Many SMBs will need support services to integrate necessary security components. ChannelTimes takes the point of view of resellers:

In this era of cutthroat competition, channel partners won't survive on box pushing. Specializing or creating one's own niche will help partners survive and avail better profits. Considering the boom in Small and Medium Business (SMB) vertical, channel partners can bank in on the promises offered by the networking security industry.

Forgetting about the sales pitch part, the point is that there is a substantial need for security products and services in the SMB market. And now their getting what they need.
