What Next, Spamcasting?

GFI, a network security company based in the UK, is reporting on yet another type of pump-and-dump spam. This time spammers are pushing low quality MP3 files like this one (hosted at GFI). GFI points out this poor quality is in part to avoid detection:

The spam is a short, 30-second MP3 file recorded at low bit-rate with a synthetic female voice promoting a particular stock; the voice heavily distorted to avoid signature-based anti-spam approaches.
.

This may turn into a flash in the pan like PDF spam and eventually taper off but that will depend on how long it takes to get good detection in place. Email administrators may be tempted to block all MP3 attachments if this becomes a favored technique of spammers.
