Good Tips for the Security Novice

I was a little hesitant to click through on a BusinesssWeek article entitled "Looming Online Security Threats in 2008". It isn't even Thanksgiving yet and already Christmas decorations are in the stores and doom and gloom predictions for 2008 are showing up in the press. Actually, this article is quite a good summary of major threats for those who don't follow cybersecurity in detail. One of the best points was made succinctly by Chris Rouland, chief technology officer in Internet security systems division at IBM when he said:

"The personal computer isn't the target of 2008; it's the browser,"

The article touches on social networking hacks, data losses and concludes with some basic tips, like staying up to date with patches and watching out for social engineering attacks. There is nothing new here for in the trenches system admins and developers but it's an excellent piece to pass on to managers and executives who don't get the security problems organizations are facing today.
