Hackers Attacking Online Gamers
Online gaming is big business so it's not surprising to hears hackers are trying to get a piece of the business. Now that some online games, like World of Warcraft and Second Life, have matured to the point where they support markets for virtual goods and services they have become targets for thieves stealing those virtual objects as well as credit card information. Japanese and Korean gaming sites are targets according to Chosun.com
AhnLab, a security software company, said Monday that a study of ten security threats in 2007 revealed a growing number of hacking incidents affecting Internet game sites. The hackers pilfer users' personal information to steal virtual goods to trade for money."There is a 'cyber black market' where virtual valuables like game items are exchanged for cash," a company staffer said. "Because game users' IDs, credit card numbers and other personal information are frequently traded in this cyber black market, the problem is getting bigger."
According to the article, Symnatec is also warning of attacks against Japanese and Korean gaming sites.
