Databases for Cloud Computing Gets Serious

EnterpriseDB will start beta testing an Oracle compatible version of PostgreSQL in March using Amazon's computing and storage services. How compatible this version is remains to be seen, but it doesn't need all the spatial, RDF, text management extras of Oracle 10g and 11g to be competitive. If most PL/SQL code will run on it and if it supports transactions at a significantly lower cost than Oracle, then this will be a serious option for many businesses.

Bob Zurek, CTO of EnterpriseDB, told ComputerWorld:

"What MySQL was for LAMP, we will be for the cloud," he said, referring to the popular open-source technology stack of Linux, Apache, MySQL and either Perl, PHP or Python.

In addition to lower costs the big draw will be reducing management headaches. I can't count how many nights I've spent installing and configuring Oracle databases, wrestling with storage configurations, and looking for workarounds for features that don't work quite as I expected.

If EnterpriseDB attends to the security requirements of users and even goes so far as to add a service like Sentrigo's realtime monitoring, EnterpriseDB will be worth a serious look.
