Security Device Wins Best Innovation Award at CES
Yoggie Security Systems has won the Best of Innovations 2008 Award for computer accessories from the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) for it's plug-in multi-purpose security device. The device is called the Gatekeeper Pico and looks like a USB drive but it contains and Intel XScale PXA270, 128 MB SDRAM and 128 NAND Flash and runs Linux with an array of security software inclduing SNORT, Kaspersky anti-virus and anti-firewall, firewall, content filtering, anti-phishing, VPN client and several other applications.
The price of varying models of the Gatekeeper Pico range from $179 to $249 with an annual subscription fee.
The press release from Yoggie describes some attractive features as well as a claim that need a little more to back it up than we get in the article:
The device does not require complex installation, configuration or ongoing management (although advanced users can alter the configuration should they wish to). With the Gatekeeper Pico providing Pentagon-level security [???] for their home PC or laptop, consumers no longer need to run software-based security suites. This means increased performance for their computer. In addition, the Gatekeeper Pico has parental controls built in and can be configured so that, if it is disconnected (by a child wanting access to off-limits websites) Internet access will be denied.
Claims of military grade security aside, this kind of security appliance for laptops holds a lot of promise and along with full disk encryption could become standard equipment for compliance minded users.
