SMB Security Survey

eMediaUSA and GFI Software have conducted a security survey of small and mid-sized businesses and found that few IT pros in these companies (10-12%) are looking for more money or staff to improve security. They are more concerned with education:

A survey of 455 IT executives in small and medium sized businesses in the US found that 48% said that awareness on security issues among employees – the ‘weakest link’ – was a key factor that could lead to better overall security.

That's an interesting finding given the growth in mobile devices is expanding the corporate network:

IT managers today have to dedicate more time and resources to deal with end-user support issues. The proliferation of consumer devices and the increasing number of employees using laptops, in and out of the office, have widened a network’s footprint and with that the associated increase in threats. As our survey shows, so has the workload for IT managers in SMBs.

If IT staff in SMBs have any say, it looks like users will be taking on more responsibility for security than they may have in the past.
