Getting Root Access on Asus EEE

So you sick of hearing about Windows vulnerabilities and you worried malware is migrating to Mac OS, what do you do? Go Linux? Sure, Linux is useful but it doesn't mean we can dump all concern about security. For example, Rise Security was able to gain root access in the version of Linux shipped with the Asus EEE, an ultra light, low cost mobile PC. I was more surprised with how I didn't like the small footprint keyboard on the Asus EEE than about the existence of a vulnerability (due to Samba).

The Rise Security posting explains the vulnerability in in Unix-speak, for the uninitiated I like Technology Questions' description of the problem.

The big point is that we can't run from vulnerabilities. Where ever we land, they'll be there. We need to lean to deal with the operating system we've committed to.
