I Hope My Vote Was Counted Yesterday
Yesterday was primary day in Virginia, Maryland and Washington D.C. and while there was much political analysis late into the evening, there wasn't much discussion about the one thing that continues to astonish me about my polling place: the lack of a verifiable ballot. I and the rest of Virginia voters who use these e-voting machines are left to hope that when we push the big red "VOTE" button on the touch screen, something actually happens and isn't lost in the cyber ballot box. We Virginians do have the consolation of knowing we can go to the gas station or ATM and get a paper trail of our transaction. Someday, voting machine vendors may acquire that same sophisticated technology for their machines.
Perhaps with the downturn in the economy, the especially hard hit financial services industry will lay off some it its software designers and engineers who have mastered the complexities of printing ATM receipts and the voting machine vendors will finally get what they need to build a machine that can generate a paper trail.
