Protect America Act and its Potential Risks
Security researchers from Sun, SRI, Columbia and UPenn have called the question of risks associated with the kind of large scale surveillance that appears to be undertaken by the U.S. federal government. In a paper in IEEE Privacy & Security journal, the researchers raise a number of concerns.
An ABC News report on the article focus on the fact that, if the system were compromised, it would provide invaluable intelligence to the very targets of this surveillance. The paper also takes on legal and policy issues, architecture and implementation issues, and the gaps between what is called for in the Protect America Act and what can be accomplished technically.
The fact that this paper appeared in a respected peer reviewed journal should keep it from being dismissed as partisan attacks on current policy.
