This Week in Phishing: Taxes and the IRS
Phishing lures change like the weather. With tax time, come phishing scams promising tax refunds or threatening actions by the IRS.
As if some of us didn't have enough to do at tax time, SANS is reporting you can add filtering out phishing lures like:
Dear [Name of Executive]
I am sorry but in order for [Name of Firm] to get a tax refund, all the fields must be completed.
Please complete the missing fields on the attached form and re-send it to me.
Even with all the right image files and logos, would anyone seriously think such a short, straight to the point letter is from the IRS? In all fairness to the agency, they have to include a lot more legalese and boiler plate text in their letters. If these phishers had ever run a legitimate business, they'd know that.
