Data Loss Prevention Market Consolidates; Management Challenges Ahead

Sophos is adding endpoint encryption to its product line by acquiring Utimaco Safeware AG in a move similar to CheckPoint acquiring Pointsec and McAfee acquiring SafeBoot. The consolidation is part of a steady march to the broader adoption of endpoint encryption.

The business drivers behind data loss protection (DLP), i.e. compliance and protection of intellectual property, apply to endpoint encryption which is one part of broad DLP strategies. Full disk encryption on laptops comes with a host of management challenges (listen to a podcast on that topic) and companies will have to wade into unknown waters with regards to putting software on employee owned devices, like smartphones. We're in the early stages of this story, the more difficult (and interesting) parts are coming.
