Slaying the E-Mail Dragon: One Success Story from NYT
After reading Luis Suarez's New York Times piece I Freed Myself from E-Mail's Grip I wanted to email everyone I work with to tell them about it - but the irony of littering their inboxes with an article on controlling email was too much to swallow.
The article discusses one person's attempt to regain productivity lost in the swamp of electronic communication. This guy is no Luddite. He works for IBM and continues to use email, but he is trying to figure out how to use it in conjunction with other communication mechanisms, like IM, blogs and wikis. He is not trying to avoid communicating, he just wants to do it more efficiently.
I'm trying to make more use of wikis in my work but I'm not such a fan of IM, it's too intrusive. I suppose I could flag myself as busy but I'd have to use it so much it defeats the purpose. I'm sure we'll all have a different optimal mix of communication tools. Suarez's piece shows with a little experimentation we can find a better way to communicate.
