The Basics of Vishing

A new article on vishing has just been added to The Essentials Series: Messaging and Web Security - Volume III. Here is an excerpt:

Scams using phone systems have been with us for a while. Hacking phone systems began in the 1950s as new equipment was deployed that used in-band signaling for automatic long-distance dialing. Back then, a few clever "phreakers," as they were known, discovered how to generate tones at particular frequencies to control parts of the phone system. Today, Voice over IP (VoIP) is used for a new implementation of an old scam: using social engineering techniques to collect personally identifying information. This scam is known as vishing.
