Trading the Desktop for the Cloud

Can you trade your desktop for the cloud? Probably not completely but I'd like to find out just how far we can get today, so starting this week, I'm going to conduct an experiment in which I do as much work as possible using online desktop replacement tools. I will blog on progress of the experiment each day for the next week and at the end of the week decide if I should carry on to next week.

Here are some of my starting parameters and assumptions.

First, I'm going to use Google Docs, Google Calendar, Gmail for this experiment. I like some of Zoho's features more but I'm already sharing some Google docs so it is in some ways a "legacy" application and I'll stick with it.

I'm going to save as much work as possible to the cloud, either in Google Docs folders or on Amazon S3 storage. Again, I already have an S3 account so I'll stick with it.

I will work with multiple machines, including a laptop running Vista and an Asus Eee PC running Linux. I'll probably do some work on a Mac OS X just to show the operating system doesn't matter.

Finally, I'm not going to fight to make things work in the cloud or with online tools. The goal of this exercise is to see how much I can easily move online. For example, I don't know of any online replacement for Microsoft Visio. Of course, I'll keep using desktop only tools for specialized applications, like integrated development environments (IDEs).

I hope by the end of the week to have accumulated enough experience with cloud desktop to save others from the some of the unproductive paths I go down.
