Trading the Desktop for the Cloud: Day 1

The first day of a cloud-centric work day was relatively uneventful but I did find a couple of unexpected snags. (This is a follow-up article to Trading the Desktop for the Cloud)

First, I discovered Google Calendar does not work offline with Google Gears, or at least I can't find a way to make this work. This isn't too much of a problem but there are times when I don't have Internet access and want to check my calendar. I didn't expect to run into a problem with limited Internet access so soon into this experiment.

Second, I had to reference an old Word document that wasn't online. Rather than upload and edit with Google Docs, I just used MS Word. I chalk this up to dealing with legacy and transition issues.

Finally, I'm getting used to an Asus Eee PC 900. If I'm moving to the cloud, I want to be able to access my stuff at any time from any where so I need hardware to support that. Overall, I really like having a light weight fully functional PC that I keep with me all the time. The battery life is good enough to last the full day without a recharge but I don't use it for all my work, just when I'm away from my desk. For me, it's far easier to use the Eee than a smartphone for Web work and more convenient to carry around than my full sized laptop. I like the default interface (something akin to Linux on training wheels) but I'm already starting to see the limits of it already. More on that later after I do some digging on how to configure the interface.
