Intelligence Agency Handheld Device Stolen

The Times of London reports a hand held device belonging to the MI5 intelligence service was stolen through an open window.

Fortunately the device was encrypted.

This may be embarrassing for the agency but it also demonstrates how hard physical security can be. These guys are professionals and even their stuff gets stolen. In another case mentioned in the article, police are investigating the sale of an MI6 agents camera on eBay. It supposedly contained images of terror suspects.

Physical security, no matter how good, is never enough. Encryption is the best chance of keeping confidential data out of the hands of thieves.
