Combating Mobile Malware

Get a handle on mobile malware with a new article just posted to the Messaging and Web Security Digital Library. Here's an excerpt:

More and more of us are using mobile devices. Laptops have not quite assumed the role of the "luggable" mobile device of the late 1980's but compared to some of the devices today, the five or six pound laptop is looking more like a desktop device. Just in the past year we've seen major improvements or announcements in a number of mobile devices that provide much of the functionality of laptops, such as:
  • Apple iPhone
  • Blackberry Storm
  • T Mobile G1, aka the Google Phone
and the new generation of ultraportable laptops called 'netbooks' such as:
  • Asus Eee
  • Dell Inspiron Mini
  • HP Mini
What these all have in common is that smaller, lighter, and in some cases low cost devices are now serving up sufficient performance to take on common computing and communication tasks. And, unfortunately, like ants to a picnic, you can expect malware to on its way. When it comes to mobile devices and malware we need to combine some best practices from the desktop world with the mobile-specific practices to ensure there is adequate protection for these devices and their users. The first step is avoiding the pitfalls of myths about mobile devices.
