Business Needs to Get Out Ahead of Security Regulation

An interesting quote in a USA Today story on security company acquisitions speaks to the increasing level of concern about current levels of information security.

"The government is starting to better protect its own systems," says Amit Yoran, CEO of security firm NetWitness. "Ultimately, the mind-set that security matters will translate into new regulations and programs affecting private industry."

The federal government is moving to make its systems more secure. The EU is considering more software liability regulation. New regulations will no doubt be strongly resisted by those to be regulated. There is always a risk that a high profile breach or attack will lead to a poorly thought out, hastily enacted legislation that creates as many problems as it solves.

Businesses that get ahead of this with a risk management strategy and a corresponding security management plan will be in the best position to adapt to any new regulations. Now is the time to be implementing and improving security measures. Those that wait too long will pay too much.
