Key to Online Apps Success: Control, Control, Control
BusinessWeek asks what's Holding back Google Apps?. The answer is the same thing that always kills deals to move corporate data to the cloud: control.
Storing data on Google server isn't in keeping with common governance practices. There needs to be some pretty hard and clear rules governing what is done with data stored on 3rd party servers and what liability is assumed by the 3rd party. Cloud providers can't assume that promising best efforts while saying if anything goes wrong they are not liable and expect businesses to beat a path to their door.
Concern about online apps is less about technical issues and more about organizational issues, like control and responsibility. If my free email and calendar go down (which it may be right now) I'm not going to complain. Paying business customers are a different market and Google needs to adopt to the expectations of businesses if they want Google Apps to thrive.
