Evolution of Security Market: Cisco Acquires Anti-spam Technology
Cisco has announced that it will acquire IronPort, an e-mail and Web security company. IronPort is known for reputation-based spam filtering and their technology complements Cisco's security offerings. From a security strategy perspective, this merger is an example of the evolution of the information security that is adapting to the needs of market.
Other examples of this evolution include, at the low end of the market, Microsoft's move into basic security offerings, like personal firewalls and anti-virus. Traditional security vendors are moving into more strategic offerings based on risk management and comprehensive security information management.
The older, well understood technologies are becoming more commodity like and being embedded in operating systems and network infrastructure. At the same time, long-term companies in the security market are tackling emerging challenges, like managing multiple point systems and demonstrating compliance. Whether you are responsible for deploying anti-virus software or managing SOX compliance, these changes in the market are positive indicators.
