« Vista: The Last Microsoft Operating System that will Matter | Main | Phishing: Who’s Problem is it Anyway? »

Microsoft Vista Launch Less Than Hoped But As Expected

OK, Vista is out and on the shelves for consumers. Does anyone outside of IT care? Here's the take from one not-yet-user quoted in the Washington Post:

"Every time Windows comes out it has bugs," he said. "I don't want to pay for that yet. I'll probably wait a couple of months."

That seems to be a common feeling, according to the same article:

Consumers can finally get their hands on Microsoft Corp.'s long-delayed Windows Vista, but unlike the mad midnight rushes retailers saw with the recently released video game consoles, stores saw only a trickle of early adopters Tuesday.

According to The Register, this is understandable, Microsoft has given little reason to upgrage:

So far, neither consumers nor businesses have been given a killer argument to upgrade. The big ticket features are improved security (mentioned during launch Monday and expected to be talked up at next week's RSA Conference in San Francisco by Bill Gates), parental controls (boosted during Monday's launch) and the Aero interface - which consumers can't get their hands on unless fork out dollars extra for that beefier PC. Based on this check box list of features and the kinds of mixed reviews of Windows Vista has been receiving, don't expect a Windows 95 lemming-like wave of upgrades.

There are fans out there too, but this comment from CNN, while certainly true, leaves some of us wondering if anyone in Redmond is stung by the faint praise:

How does Vista stack up? After a couple of months of testing in the Fortune gadget laboratory, my verdict is this: Vista is definitely the best operating system Microsoft has ever made.

So in conclusion, the first day is nothing to write home about. Microsoft operating systems, we have all learned, need at least one Service Pack before we can be confident of stability. Like I said yesterday, this is the last operating system from Microsoft that will matter but it will matter nonetheless. (But I'm still waiting for Service Pack 1).
